MYSURU: Following the raid conducted on a farmhouse on Bannur road, where illegal sex determination tests were being conducted, a case has been registered against Shyamala Karthikeyan, a BSc nurse, for conducting illegal sex determination tests at her nursing home, SK Hospital and Laboratory, at Bannur.

The two-storey medical centre, which had 15 beds and scanning facilities, was allegedly targetting women from rural areas and conducting sex determination tests for a fee ranging from Rs 50,000 to Rs 1.5 lakh.

The investigation revealed that Shyamala had been running the nursing home since 2019 and had conducted over 200 sex determination tests. She would only conduct tests through middlemen and trusted individuals, paying them a commission for referrals. The income generated from these tests was used to purchase a luxurious farmhouse.

Shyamala, the mastermind behind the illegal activities, had allegedly used her farmhouse for abortions and other illicit activities. The investigation is ongoing, and more details are expected to emerge.
