KALABURAGI: The prime accused in the murder of a Congress leader was shot at by the police on the outskirts of Shahbad in the district while he was fleeing after attacking a police sub-inspector.
Vijay Halli, who is facing several serious cases, had brutally murdered Girish Kambanur, a Congress leader and former town panchayat president, in Shahbad on July 11. The Kalaburagi police had formed several teams to nab him. The police had nabbed him two days ago.
On Saturday, when the police had taken him to the scene of murder and seize one of the weapons which Vijay had dumped near Tonasanahalli, he attacked Shahbad woman sub-inspector Suvarna with the same machete. The Chittapur police inspector Prakash Yatnur, who was part of the team, first fired a warning shot in the air, but Vijay did not relent. The inspector then shot Vijay in the leg, firing two rounds.
Kalaburagi Superintendent of Police Isha Pant visited the spot and also called on SI Suvarna who is undergoing treatment in the ICU at a private hospital. The accused Vijay has also been admitted to the Kalaburagi district hospital.
Girish Kambanur, who is the husband of the incumbent town panchayat president, and Vijay Halli had a long-standing dispute related to a woman. Vijay had also murdered Girish’s brother Satish Kambanur in 2020. He was arrested in the case and jailed. After he came out on bail, he was plotting to eliminate Girish too.
On July 11, when Girish was at the Shahbad railway station to purchase tickets for a journey to Bengaluru, Vijay and his henchmen brutally murdered Girish in broad daylight.
