BENGALURU: After a shocking case of assault and invasion of privacy at a hotel in Hangal went viral, leader of Opposition in the Assembly, R Ashoka, slammed the Congress government and alleged that law and order in the state under the Siddaramaiah government have completely broken down.

“There is no fear in people. The Chief Minister is only thinking of politics and Lok Sabha elections, not of the public”, Ashoka said on Thursday.

This comes after a group of men barged into a room of a lodge in Hangal of Haveri district and thrashed a couple of different communities for being together.

He attacked the Congress government for the “repeat” of such incidents and the “breakdown” of law and order. “I condemn the Haveri incident, as rape has happened. This kind of incident is recurring in Karnataka. In Belagavi, too, a Dalit woman was insulted. There is no law and order in the state”, Ashoka said.

Police have also invoked charges of gangrape against the accused based on the woman’s allegations. In the couple’s assault case, the police said that two people had been arrested, and the investigation is ongoing. The Haveri Superintendent of Police, however, said that the alleged rape in the incident was not mentioned to the police earlier.

“We weren’t told about rape earlier. We came to know about this only through media reports about the video by the woman. We have booked a case under the appropriate section; the investigation is ongoing. As of now, we have arrested two in the incident”, Haveri SP said.

The incident reportedly occurred in a hotel room in Hangal where, barging into the room, a group of men assaulted the interfaith couple. The police took action after the video of the incident went viral.

Former Chief Minister of the state and BJP leader Basavaraj Bommai also slammed Siddaramaiah who raises the issue of moral policing and asked why is silent on the incident. “After manhandling the girl, she had been taken to the secluded place and reportedly sexually assaulted”, Bommai posted on X about the incident.

“This incident of moral policing by the miscreants has given the feeling of whether the state government exist or not? Why Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who talks a lot about moral policing is silent on this particular incident? Is it because the miscreants belonged to the minority community? Mr @siddaramaiah, clarify your stand on this incident”, he added in the post.

BJP leader CT Ravi termed the incident an “inhuman act” and asked for “immediate action” against the culprits without being swayed by “vote bank politics”. “This moral policing was an inhuman act. Immediate action should be taken. There should be no vote-bank politics on this. Such an incident cannot be tolerated,” CT Ravi said. (ANI)
