BENGALURU: Minister for medical education, skill development, entrepreneurship and livelihood, Dr Sharan Prakash Patil, said the Nimhans stands out as a centre that offers advanced research, high-quality care, compassion and concern.

Delivering his speech during the golden jubilee celebrations of Nimhans on Friday, held in the institution’s auditorium, Dr Patil, in presence of President Droupadi Murmu, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda, said the institution is a beacon of hope for their families and serves as a treasure trove of medical education and research.

Established in 1937, Nimhans has played a pivotal role in neuropsychiatric care, shaping mental health policies and offering unwavering support to those in need, regardless of socio-economic barriers. It evolved from the mental health institute in 1954 to becoming Nimhans in 1974, a deemed university in 1994 and eventually a national institute of importance. Today, it stands as a guiding light of excellence and one of the country’s premier institutions, he noted.

“As the Minister for medical education, I fully support all initiatives of Nimhans. Our government is committed to increasing funding for research and infrastructure, facilitating collaborations with global institutions, and extending mental health services to underserved regions through specialized outreach programmes”, Dr Patil stated.

Lauding the services of administration, faculty and staff of Nimhans on this golden milestone, the minister said for the past 50 years Nimhans has maintained excellence and has been a source of support to countless people not just nationwide but also at the international level.

Dr Patil urged students and young professionals to draw inspiration from this legacy, emphasizing the need to carry forward the values of innovation, compassion, unwavering dedication, and farsightedness.

MPs Dr CN Manjunath, PC Mohan, Tejasvi Surya, Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar, and NIMHANS Director Dr. Pratima Murthy among others were present.
