BENGALURU: A neighbour, who was addicted to online betting, murdered an elderly woman in Kumbalgod, stuffed the body in a suitcase and dumped it in the Ramohalli Lake. Police have taken the accused Amit into custody.
Amit allegedly murdered Jayamma and stole the gold jewellery she was wearing. He then stuffed the body into a suitcase, booked an autorickshaw in broad daylight so no one would suspect anything and transported the body in the suitcase. He then dumped the body in Ramohalli Lake here and escaped.
The body was found in Ramohalli Lake, under Kumbalgod police station limits and it is suspected to have been dumped 2-3 days ago. Locals, who saw the body floating in the lake, informed the police.
On June 15, evening, Jayamma had gone to Amit’s house as she didn’t have a phone asked to let her make a call. At that time, for the sake of gold, the accused strangled and killed elderly Jayamma. Later, to avoid suspicion, he even took part in the search for the elderly woman.
He planned that if he transported the suitcase during the daytime, no one would suspect anything, and that’s how he moved the body. It has now come to light that Amit murdered Jayamma for online betting and to repay debts. Further investigation is under way.
