BENGALURU: With phase-1 of Namma Metro fully operational, benefitting lakhs of commuters daily, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) has taken up work on the second phase to connect more parts of the city. At the same time, it has also proposed a hike in fares in coming days.

The first phase of the Metro includes a total length of 42.6 km on the Green and Purple lines. Another 18 km will be added initially under the second phase. Currently, the maximum fare is Rs 60 and BMRCL has proposed raising this to anywhere between Rs 70 and Rs 90. The BMRCL has cited the rising power cost for the fare hike.

Anjum Parvez, managing director of BMRCL, said they have sent a proposal for Metro fare hike, but have not got approval yet.

Anjum Parvez, managing director of BMRCL said, “Namma Metro is best solution for traffic congestion. People can reach their destination faster than other means of transport. At present, the construction of the Baiyappanahalli-Whitefield section is in the final phase. We have sent a proposal to the government regarding hiking Metro fares, but have not received approval as of now”.

Metro commuters can expect availability of  services from Baiyappanahalli to Whitefield by mid-year. This is expected to bring down traffic problems.
