KALABURAGI: The police opened three rounds of fire at a man’s legs after he threatened people and a police team with sharp weapons in the supermarket area here on Sunday night.

The man, wielding two knives in both hands, was menacingly moving around the supermarket area, threatening people, when a police team arrived there. The man, later identified as Mohammed Fazal, was advised to drop the weapons and surrender, but he did not heed the warning.

When he approached the police with both knives in his hands, police sub-inspector Waheed Kotwal first fired a shot to the ground, which missed Fazal, and then shot him in the leg twice.

Briefing reporters on Monday, Kalaburagi Police Commissioner Chetan R said Mohammed Fazal threatened to kill people at the supermarket area and attempt to attack them. “When he approached SI Waheed Kotwal and team menacingly, the officer shot him in the leg. We have not yet been able to establish why he was carrying two weapons”, he said.

The injured Mohammed Fazal was shifted to hospital in a police vehicle.

The police chief further said that Fazal sells fruits in the area and added, “The family members claim he loses him mental balance on Full Moon and New Moon days. We are also looking into this”.
