Man stages kidnap to demand Rs 90 lakh ransom from father, held along with two others

BENGALURU: A man, who staged his own kidnap to deceive his father and extract a ransom has been arrested by the police. The accused had got his friends to call his father and demand Rs 90 lakh for his release.

Manoharlal Patel (68) had received a call last week at 8 am from his son’s WhatsApp itself. The callers claimed that that they had kidnapped Patel’s son Manish and demanded Rs 90 lakh for his release.

Manish (40) had left home saying he was going to Gadag for some financial transaction the previous day. Manish had told his father he will go by train and call the next morning. But Manohar Patel received a call in the morning informing about his son’s kidnap, DCP Northeast Mithun R said.

Patel informed police that afternoon and the police tracked Manish’s mobile which was switched off. Then, the family received a phone call from a different number asking whether money was arranged.

Tracking the number from which the call was made, police searched in Hassan area. At this time, Manish was sleeping comfortably in a room with two other persons. When police interrogated him, it came to light that Manish had staged kidnap drama and tried to extract money from father, the DCP said.

The RR Nagar police have registered a case and arrested three accused, including Manish, and sent them to Parappana Agrahara jail.
