HASSAN: A man killed his wife with a machete suspecting her fidelity and then attempted to commit suicide on Thursday in the district. The incident took place in Thattekere village in Belur taluk.

The deceased Prema (40) was an Anganwadi teacher. Shanthoji Rao murdered his wife and then attempted suicide by slitting his throat with a knife. When some locals noticed him, they immediately rushed him to the hospital, where he is undergoing treatment.

Family members of Prema says that the couple’s relationship was good, but Shanthoji had started assaulting her since two years. On Wednesday night, Prema served food to her husband and children. Later, her husband locked the door and killed his wife.

On seeing their mother dead, the children started shouting for help. Shanthoji was a habitual drinker and , used to beat his wife every day, they claimed.

The jurisdictional Arehalli police visited the spot and taken up further investigation.
