The couple was attacked for marrying outside the caste.

CHIKKAMAGALUR: Almost three years after a couple belonging to different castes got married, they were attacked by the members of the man’s community who barged into their house. The incident occurred at Kallattigari village in Tarikere taluk on the night of January 24.

The man belongs to the Uppara community while his wife is from the Valmiki community of Scheduled Tribes. The man’s uncle and some people of the community barged into their house and attacked him for bringing ‘disrepute’ to the community. His wife too was assaulted.

The man was dragged out of his house and assaulted.

It is alleged that the man’s uncles have been harassing him mentally ever since 2021 when he married out of caste. He had been boycotted earlier too, villagers said.

In a video, the man said they fell in love and got married on March 24, 2021 with the consent of their parents. “Initially, we did not face any problems. My uncles Umapaty and Rajashekar, and members of my community were against it. My uncles tried to throw us out of the house. A similar instance had occurred earlier and officials had to intervene”.

“On January 24 night, they barged into our house and attacked us. They also brutally assaulted my wife. We have lodged a complaint with the police”, he said.
