BENGALURU: A man was arrested for cheating a woman of over Rs 20 lakh with false promises. The arrested accused, Shivakumar Nagar Navile, allegedly cheated Meenakshi, promising that he would make her the director of the Vishwa Kannada festival and the state president of the Press Council for Women.
Earlier, he claimed to be the president of the Karnataka Press Council and demanded Rs 11,000 to make her a member. Later, he took lakhs of rupees for the Vishwa Kannada Festival and also collected money for the second edition of the Vishwa Kannada Festival held in Singapore.
Meenakshi gave him the money that had been set aside for her father’s medical treatment, and even mortgaged her mangalasutra. He took the money, promising to return it after receiving funds from the government, but after the Singapore event ended, he did not return the money.
When she started to ask for returning money, he allegedly threatened the victim. A complaint was filed at the Govindaraj Nagar police station, and a lookout notice was issued. On Friday night, the accused, who was on his way to the Kempegowda International Airport to travel to Dubai, was arrested by Govindaraj Nagar police.
The police are gathering information about the financial dealings from the accused and are conducting further interrogation.
