BIDAR: Lingayat seer Sharanabasappa Appa, who was known for his philanthropic activities, passed away here on Thursday. His last rites were conducted as per the Pancha Peetha and Basava Sharana philosophy at the Sharana Basaveshwara temple on Friday evening.
Sharanabasappa Appa was laid to rest beside Doddappa Appa in the presence of the heads of prominent maths from the Kalyana Karnataka region. Over one lakh bilva leaves and 5,050 kg of sacred ash (vibhuti) were used for the last rites.
Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, who paid his last respects, said Sharanabasappa Appa was laid to rest with full state honours. “On a day we hoisted the National Flag, it is significant that we presented the Tricolour to Appa’s family. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge had called me to inform me of the passing away and expressed his inability to attend the last rites. I had met Appa the last time I visited Kalaburagi. Appa was popular for this religious, educationals and social work”.
