CHIKKAMAGALUR: Quick thinking by a KSRTC bus driver, whose brakes had failed, saved the lives of 43 passengers on board, on the Charmadi Ghat here on Friday. The incident occurred in Banakal police limits near Kottigehara in Mudigere taluk.
The bus was on its way from Kadur to Mangaluru when the brakes failed while traversing through the ghat road. The driver managed to slow down the bus and brought it to a stop by banging the front left wheel against a culvert.
The brakes of the bus failed when it was coming downhill. As soon as the driver managed to bring the vehicle to a stop, smoke started emanating and all the passengers disembarked. The passengers and locals appreciated the bus driver for showing presence of mind in the situation.
