BENGALURU: A single-judge bench of the Karnataka High Court on Friday ordered cancellation of state board-level examinations for students of Classes 5 and 8. The examinations were scheduled to be commence from March 13 and the high court has now directed the state government to revise the schedule.
However, the order is applicable only for this academic year and all rules should be followed from next year, the court said.
Justice Pradeep Singh Yerur issued the order after hearing a petition filed by the unaided schools’ association. The court also said that the annual examinations should be conducted as earlier and the evaluation of answer scripts should be done at school level.
K V Dhananjay, the advocate for the petitioners, argued that the decision was taken by the officers without the issue being discussed by the legislature.
The court also instructed the Education Department that before coming to a final decision on conducting board exams for students of Classes 5 and 8, it should elicit the opinion of parents and discuss it with state government.
