SHIVAMOGGA: The police opened fire at a history-sheeter, who is wanted in several cases, after he attacked a police team with a knife when they tried to arrest him.

The accused has been identified as Razaq. He was involved in several cases, including four murder attempts and a ganja case, and was absconding.

The accused has been lodged in the jail ward of the hospital.

Police received a tip-off that the accused was hiding in a forest area in Tirthahalli. When they went there to arrest him, he attacked them with a knife. Holehonnur police inspector Lakshmipathy first fired a warning shot in the air, but the accused did not surrender. Then, the officer shot Razaq in the leg.

Constable Arjun was injured in the incident. The accused and the injured police constable were taken to McGann Hospital for treatment.

Police Superintendent G K Mithun Kumar said, “A case was registered under Section 109 (Section 307 of IPC) for attempt to murder. Of the three accused, the main accused Razaq faces five cases including attempt to murder, peddling and consuming ganja”.

“He was absconding for the last few days and early today morning, the Holehonnur police inspector received information that he was hiding in Kumsi police limits. When the police team tried to arrest him, Razaq tried to attack constable Arjun. When the police warned him to surrender, he tried to attack the inspector too when he was shot at”, the SP added.
