BENGALURU: The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) has initiated action to clear footpath encroachments in the city. Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda has taken up the ‘Safe Pedestrian Campaign’ by prioritizing 2,000 kilometers of roads in the city. A July 1 deadline has been given to clear footpaths for all those who have encroached on arterial and sub-arterial roads.

According to the minister, if footpath encroachments are not cleared after July 1, heavy fines ranging from Rs 250 to Rs 10,000 will be levied. There will also be a penalty for placing advertisement boards on footpaths. If shops encroach footpaths, their licences may be cancelled.

Vehicle parking is not allowed on pedestrian pathways and will be towed. Vehicles are being parked on roadsides and footpaths. From July 1, stickers will be pasted and notices issued on abandoned vehicles. From July 10, if these abandoned vehicles are not cleared, action will be taken and they will be auctioned. Bus stops should not be within 75 metres of a traffic signal and no parking or vending should be allowed in that area, he instructed.

“It’s a politically risky and unpopular decision. But, necessary for the sake of Bengaluru. At least some footpaths should be reserved for pedestrians. I request people to respect the fundamental right of public to decent footpath. Pls voluntarily remove encroachments or obstructions. It is the law. It may inconvenience you. But, it is for the larger good”, he posted on X.
