Four Class 10 students die after drowning in river near Surathkal

MANGALURU: Four school students, who were reported missing since Tuesday, died after drowning in a river near Haleyangadi in the taluk. The deceased are Yashwith Chandrakanth, Nirup, Anvith and Raghavendra, all studying in Class 10.

The four, who were studying at the Vidyadayini High School in Surathkal had attended the English preparatory exam on Tuesday and later went missting. A complaint was lodged with the Surathkal police after which a search was launched. Their bodies were later found in the river near Haleyangadi. The autopsy was performed at Wenlock Hospital here.

“This is a very tragic incident. They wrote the preparatory exam and left for home, but we got to know from the parent in the evening that the children had not returned home. I, along with the parents, went to the Surathkal police station and lodged a complaint. The police checked CCTV footage and later found the bodies in the river”, said school headmaster Balachandra.

“The boys were doing quite well in studies and had their Hindi preparatory exams today. Their parents also used to visit the school regularly and they had not complaints against the school. They were all Kannada medium students in the same section”, he added.
