HASSAN: A five-year-old girl child drowned in a canal at Madhuranahalli in Arkalgud taluk on Friday. She was identified as Supreetha, daughter of Revanna and Bhagya of Madhuranahalli village.

The girl, along with some friends, had gone to the canal near the village as schools were closed in view of the Karnataka bandh. While she was playing with her friends, she lost her footing, fell into the canal and was swept away in the flowing water.

Water had been released in the Harangi right bank canal to join Cauvery and the water level was quite high. The Fire and Emergency Services personnel were conducting a search for the girl for about 6 km along the canal.
