VIJAYAPURA: Five workers of the Nandi Cooperative Sugar Factory at Krishna Nagar in Babaleshwar taluk sustained serious burn injuries when a newly installed boiler, which was being tested, burst on Saturday.

The 220-ton capacity boiler was recently installed by SS Engineers of Pune at a cost of Rs 51 crore. The factory administration had scrapped a contract with ISGEC Heavy Engineering Ltd. of New Delhi and had paid Rs 5 crore to the company for termination.

Farmers are now alleging that the factory management board, led by Shashikant Patil had misused its powers and installed a substandard boiler. They have demanded a detailed investigation into the issue.

The incident occurred in Babaleshwar police limits.
