Fake doctor arrested in Bengaluru after woman loses full use of her leg

BENGALURU: A fake doctor was arrested on Thursday after a woman lost full use of one of her legs after visiting his clinic in the city with symptoms of fever.

The accused has been identified as Nagaraj Shavanur. Jyothi, a garment worker, had gone to the clinic with fever symptoms in Sanjeevini Nagar in Hegganahalli. The quack gave her two injections and prescribed some medicine.

After a few days, the site of injection started to turn completely black. She then went back to the clinic and Nagaraj gave her some cream. The site of injection soon started to degenerate and that is when she visited another doctor, whom advised surgery. As per the doctors’ instruction, she underwent a surgery but is finding it difficult to walk.

A case has been registered at Rajagopal Nagar and the police have arrested clinic owner Kumaraswamy and quack Nagaraj Shavanur.

“On September 25, I had gone to the clinic with symptoms of fever. There was no woman nurse, and the doctor gave me an injection, after which I screamed in pain. After the injection, the pain persisted for some time. After two days, the pain became intolerable again, so I visited him again and he gave me an ointment. When the pain became unbearable, he referred me to another hospital, but no one attended to me there”, said Jyothi.

“We went to another hospital and the doctors suggested some medicines and injections. After some time, the pain became unbearable, so I immediately got admitted to the hospital and a surgery was performed. I have difficulty walking. When my husband questioned the fake doctor, he said he would bear all the expenses”, she added.

“On Monday, a case was registered against a doctor after a woman lost full use of her leg after she had gone to a local clinic for treatment of fever. For further treatment, she had gone to another hospital, where she underwent surgery. We have arrested two people and written a letter about the fake clinic to the officials concerned. Further investigation is under way”, said Vinayak Patil, Deputy Commissioner of Police, North Division, Bengaluru City.
