BENGALURU: Expired products that should go to garbage were being sold to people at lesser prices at a shop in Neelasand. Without knowing any of this, people would rush to buy thinking that they can save a few rupees. After Public TV reported on the issue, food safety officials visited the shop and sealed it.
Expired products like milk, curd, bread, chicken and fruits, discarded by malls and online platforms, are being sold in some shops in the city. Shockingly, the vehicle transporting these products is dirtier than garbage vehicles. Inside it are expired and rotten products which unscrupulous businessmen are selling to line their pockets.
Expired milk is being sold at Rs 20 while a curd packet is being sold for Rs 10. A parota packet, which had expired one year ago, is being sold a week after it was discarded. Along with this, chicken is also being sold in separate covers.
A trader named Afsar was filmed misusing a vehicle (KA 01, AH 2936) brought for disposal of products from Kudlu Gate D Mart and bringing to his shop on Bazaar Street at Ashok Nagar in Neelasandra to sell. He would bring expired bread, bun, chicken, parota, vegetables, fruits, milk, curd from malls and marts and was selling them at low price. Without knowing any of this, people were rushing to buy them saying it is available for less money. Even diapers for babies was expired.
Members of a drivers’ union caught red-handed Afsar red-handed. He had befriended the staff at some malls and marts and brougth expired, rotten products to sell and makes money. When confronted by the union members, he even tried to attack them.
After Public TV reported the incident, food safety officers conducted a raid and were shocked to see many items including vegetables, toothpaste, fruits, flour expired.
The team of food safety officers included designated officers of Bengaluru, East division, Food Inspectors Anand, Ananth, Manjunath. Products with fungus growth were also seen in the shop. The shop was sealed and expired items seized by the Food Safety officers.
