BENGALURU: Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) chairperson Dr N Manjula has directed officials to accelerate the construction of nine World Bank-funded sewage treatment plants (STPs), with a combined treatment capacity of 148 MLD, across Bengaluru.
Chairing a progress-review meeting at Cauvery Bhavan, Dr Manjula assessed projects supported by the World Bank and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). She reviewed the progress of STP construction, sewerage networks, wastewater treatment and water supply works on a project-wise basis.
STPs being constructed with World Bank assistance:
- Iblur – 5 MLD
- Abbigere – 5 MLD
- UM Kaval – 10 MLD
- Kogilu – 15 MLD
- Anjanapura – 35 MLD
- Channasandra – 20 MLD
- Soulkere – 28 MLD

- Total treatment capacity: 148 MLD

Manjula sought updates from officials on the STP and sewerage works under way in the Rajarajeshwari Nagar, Dasarahalli, Byatarayanapura, Bommanahalli and Mahadevapura zones.
She directed officials to establish clear timelines for every project and complete the works without delay. Officials must respond promptly to local concerns and accord the highest priority to worker safety during project implementation, she said.
The proposed Cauvery Water Supply Scheme Stage VI, supported by JICA, has been given final shape. Final-stage discussions relating to loan approval were also held during the meeting.
The project has received approval at the government level, and preparatory work has begun. Manjula instructed officials to design the project around the future drinking-water requirements of parts of Bengaluru and its surrounding areas.
Engineers and contractors also reviewed the progress of design and construction works, wastewater treatment plants, sewerage networks and water-supply projects.
Manjula directed that other works being implemented under the JICA programme be completed by the end of December. Necessary measures must be taken to ensure that no project is halted for any reason, she said.
Chief Engineer for Innovative Projects and Research and Development Sudhir, engineers from various project divisions and other officials attended the meeting.
