BENGALURU: A second-year engineering student died on the spot after a BMTC bus knocked down her two-wheeler near Harischandra Ghat in Malleswaram when she was on her way to college today morning.

The deceased was identified as Kusumitha (20), a student at Jain college. The speeding bus knocked down her scooter from behind and locals blamed the driver for the accident. The body was shifted to KC General Hospital for post-mortem examination.

Kusumitha’s father vented his anger against BMTC.

Kusumitha’s father vented his anger saying BMTC drivers should be more careful during peak hours as students will be out of the roads. “We got to know about the accident only after half an hour”, he said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Traffic-East Sarah Fathima.

Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy said disciplinary action will be taken against the BMTC driver if he is at fault. Deputy Commissioner of Police Traffic-East Sarah Fathima said the bus brushed against the scooter when Kusumitha was on her way to college and dragged her for a little distance around 8.30 am. “The bus did not run over her, but she died due to the injuries. We have arrested the driver and taken up further investigation”, she said.

BMTC buses have earned the tag of ‘killer’ after running over numerous people in several accidents. In 2013, the BMTC buses claimed the lives of 34 people and left 97 injured, but the corporation maintains that two-wheeler riders are responsible for the accidents.
