MADIKERI: A wild elephant, which had fallen into a sanitary pit on an estate at Chelavara village in the taluk on Tuesday night was finally rescued on Thursday morning and sent back into the forest.
The elephant, which perhaps came looking for food, fell into the sanitary pit of the farmhouse belonging to Leela Appaiah of Chelavara. The elephant made desperate attempts to free itself through the night, but failed. All the while, its calf waited nearby.
Upon noticing the elephant in the pit on Thursday morning, the family informed the Forest department officials who arrived there and rescued the elephant.
On Tuesday, a male elephant was electrocuted to death at Karalakatte village in Malavalli taluk of Mandya district on the farm belonging to Nagaraju.
The elephant was about 30 years old and it is suspected that it may have come in contact with the solar electric fencing. A post-mortem examination was conducted to establish the cause of death and a case was registered.
