Drunk driving major cause of pedestrian deaths in Bengaluru, finds police study

BENGALURU: Deaths in road accidents have increased considerably in the city, especially involving pedestrians. The main reason for increased pedestrian deaths is drunk driving, as per the findings of the traffic police.

This was discovered when the traffic police checked motorists, and in most of the cases, the motorists were drunk. About 33 pedestrians have died so far in 2024 in south Bengaluru alone. Most of these accidents are due to drunken driving.

Accidents due to drunk driving have also increased in Bengaluru and the traffic police have taken many measures to reduce the number of drunk driving cases.

The traffic police plan to take measures to prevent drunk driving cases:

  • Accident is more likely to happen after 7-8 pm, so checking forĀ  drunk driving will start at 7 pm.
  • Increasing drunk driving tests near pubs and bars.
  • Traffic police plan to put up sign boards to bring down the cases of pedestrian deaths.
  • Plan to draw zebra crossings at elevated areas for pedestrians on roads.
  • Installation of notice boards, including major circles, junctions, pubs, and bars, on major roads
  • More drunk driving checks from Friday to Sunday than all other days of the week.
  • Putting up signboards to prevent pedestrians from using flyovers.
