BENGALURU : A police constable misfired at a colleague while checking a pistol at Begur police station on Friday. The injured constable was immediately admitted to Apollo Hospital and is being treated.

Ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, those possessing firearms are required to deposit them at the jurisdictional police station. Accordingly, Mukunda Reddy brought his pistol to the Begur police station in Bommanahalli area to deposit it.

When constable Venkat pressed the trigger while checking the pistol, it accidentally fired and police constable Anbudas sustained injury in the left leg inside the police station. The injured Anbudas was immediately shifted to Apollo Hospital for treatment.

The accidental firing occurred as Mukunda Reddy had not checked the pistol properly before surrendering it to the police station. There is a possibility that one of the bullets was in the chamber and fired when constable Venkat pressed the trigger.

There was a panic atmosphere inside the station for sometime after the incident. A forensic team reached the police station and recovered the expended bullet and the pistol. Senior police officers have sought information from the Begur police regarding the incident.
