Chinnaswamy stadium stampede: Autopsies reveal suffocation as main cause of deaths

All the victims died due to suffocation, as per the autopsy reports.

BENGALURU: The bodies of all the victims of the stampede that occurred on Wednesday at the Chinnnaswamy Stadium were handed over to the families after post-mortem examination on Thursday. While six were brougth dead to Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital, the autopsies of the other five victims were conducted at Victoria Hospital.

As per the autopsy reports, the victims died due to suffocation and some had sustained pressure wounds on the left part of the chest. The victims, including 13-year-old Divyanshi, died within 15 to 18 minutes of suffocation. One person suffered a cardiac arrest due to suffocation while another had broken bones, the reports said.

The deceased include Bhumik (20), who hailed from Hassan; Sahana (19) hailing from Kolar; Poornachandra (32) hailing from Mandya; Chinmayi Shetty (19); Divyanshri (13), Kanakashri Layout, Yelahanka; Shravan (20), Kuturahalli in Chintamani; Devi (29) from Andhra Pradesh; Shivalinga (17) from Kannur in Kerala; Manoj (33), Prajwal, and Akshata hailing from Mangaluru.

The youngest victim, Divyanshri, was the daughter of Shivakumar and Ashwini, residents of Kakakashri Layout in Yelahanka. The Class 8 student had gone to the stadium with her mother and aunt Rachana. Her body was brought to Bowring Hospital by her grandparents.

Shivalinga, whose family is settled in Kannur, was a student of a government school in Yelahanka. The family hails from Yadgir. Devi, who hails from Tamil Nadu and was residing at Marathalli, was working as a software engineer with Amazon.

Sahana, who was working with a private company in Bengaluru, hailed from Badamakanahalli in KGF taluk and is the daughter of Suresh Babu and Manjula. She had gone to witness the victory celebrations of RCB along with her friends.

Poornachandra, who hailed from Rayasamudra in KR Pet taluk, was working in with a privated builder in Mysuru, had come with his friends to witness the victory celebration. He is the son of ‘Headmaster’ Chandru.

Bhumik, who hailed from Kuppugodu village in Belur taluk, was pursuing his second-year engineering course in Bengaluru. The was the only son of D T Lakshman and Ashwini. The family is settled in Bengaluru for the last 20 years and Lakshman runs a business.

Bhumik had left for college on Wednesday morning and joined his friends to head to the stadium later. Unfortunately, he was crushed to death in the stampede.

Shravan was a dental student at the Ambedkar Medical College in Frazer Town and was living in a paying guest accommodation. His parents, who are farmers and hail from Kurutanahalli in Chintamani taluk, had dreamed of making his a doctor.

Manoj was pursuing a BBA course at the Presidency College in Bagalur, Yelahanka, and hailed form Kunigal. He went to the stadium after watching the crowds gathering at the stadium and near Vidhana Soudha.

Prajwal a.k.a Appu, had completed his engineering course and was working with a private company at Yelahanka Satellite Town and staying at Chikkabommasandra. He had tickets to the event, but was crushed to death near the stadium gate. He is the son of Ganesh Gopalli, a BEL employee, and Pavithra.

Meanwhile, among the 18 injured who were taken to Bowring Hospital, 15 were discharge while nine are undergoing treatment. Two of them have suffered fractures while one has suffered head injuries. Three of them need surgeries, said Medical Superintendent T Kemparaju.
