BENGALURU: With parts of Bengaluru facing water scarcity, the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) plans to supply treated water for household purposes other than drinking in order to tackle the water crisis. It has been proposed to prevent use of Cauvery water for domestic purposes like cleaning, gardening etc., and  will be implemented right away.

While the demand for drinking water in the city is increasing by the day, many people are using Cauvery water more for household purposes than for drinking. This has become a headache for the BWSSB and hence, it has come up with the new plan to reduce the misuse of the Cauvery water.

BWSSB Chairman Dr V Ram Prasat Manohar said about 40 lakh people in the city’s population are dependent on Cauvery without using private borewells. “Most of them use Cauvery for domestic purposes every day. Given the current situation, the problem of drinking water may worsen in the coming days due to the use of Cauvery for household purposes . Hence, BWSSB has decided to supply treated water to these residents for other purposes. Cauvery water is restricted only for drinking purposes only. People can store the treated water in sumps or tanks and use it for domestic use, not for drinking”, he said.

The BWSSB chairman further said, water will be supplied by BWSSB through its tanker at a concessional rate. Citizens can get water by booking through the BWSSB portal. The government department portal will be launched soon.
