BENGALURU: With a view to make solid waste management more effective in its jurisdiction, the Bengaluru North City Corporation (BNCC) has prepared a comprehensive micro plan for door-to-door garbage collection, street mapping of pourakarmikas and management of bulk waste generators.

A new strategy for waste management in Bengaluru, with block-wise micro planning has been prepared in seven divisions under the jurisdiction of Bengaluru North City Corporation and implemented since October 3. A systematic plan has been formulated by identifying houses and commercial establishments, the amount of waste and collection routes of each area. The corporation has also planned to give information of pourakarmikas to citizens to control dumping of garbage on roadsides.

Each auto tipper will be assigned a specific route. Based on number of houses and road system, about 750 to 1,000 houses are mapped for each auto tipper. This will smoothen door-to-door garbage collection, and monitoring will be done through officers and marshals.

Along with that, specific streets have been assigned to pourakarmikas also, identifying major roads, intermediate roads and small roads, specific roads have been allocated to each pourakarmika. Cleanliness work has been organised as per necessity from Monday to Sunday. Separate responsibility has been given to auto tippers also to clear garbage piles collected on roads. Similarly, separate vehicle has been fixed for block-wise garbage collection also.

Bengaluru North City Corporation Commissioner Pommala Sunil Kumar told Public TV, “We have been making attempts to improve the system since last September. We have already fixed the problems related to attendance at the mustering centres. Despite our efforts, it had become a challenge that garbage was still being found on the roads. There were also some problems with door-to-door waste collection. Along with this, people were throwing waste from vehicles on to the roads”.

“Along with the minister, we brainstormed why the door-to-door collection was not working properly. We are now implementing the micro plan on the ground and we are informing citizens about the pourakarmika assigned for each road, their work schedules, the garbage tipper and its registration number, driver’s contact number, and waste collection schedules. We are also identifying bulk waste whose waste has to go to separate vendors”, the commissioner said.

He also said the joint commissioners will conduct phone-in prorammes between 7.30 am and 9.30 am exclusively related to garbage collection and road sweeping. From door-to-door garbage collection to road cleanliness and bulk waste management, North City Corporation is preparing to systematise the entire process. It remains to be seen how effectively this micro planning will be implemented.

Meanwhile, vehicle owners were fined Rs 30,000 for illegal transport of animal waste and transferring it from one vehicle to another. Based on public complaints regarding animal waste being loaded from one vehicle to another large vehicle in Sarvagnanagar, Banaswadi, the Bengaluru North City Corporation traced the vehicles and their owners based on the registration numbers in the photo provided by the public and fined the owners and issued a warnings.
