GADAG: The Lokayukta police on Thursday caught and assistant engineer red-handed while allegedly taking Rs 1.50 lakh bribe from a contractor.
Gadag Betageri municipal council assistant engineer Virender Singh Katewala had allegedly demanded Rs 1.50 lakh from contractor Abdul Maniar to clear a bill of Rs 9 lakh.
Abdul Maniar had taken up some construction work, but the engineer asked for a bribe to clear the bill. A complaint was registered with the Lokayukta with this regard.
The engineer was caught while taking the bribe and keeping it in the side bag of his bike. A team, led by Inspector Ravi, under the guidance of Lokayukta Superintendet of Police Satish and Deputy Superintended of Police Shankar Ragi, conducted the raid.
After being caught, Virender handed over the money to the officials and then tried to flee. The accused was caught and is being interrogated.
