The Income Tax officer was nabbed redhanded while receiving a bribe of Rs 5 lakh.

BELAGAVI: At a time when Income Tax Department officials are conducting raids on businessmen, builders, jewellers and medical professionals, the Belagavi police trapped a I-T official redhanded when he was receiving a bribe from jeweller.

The I-T officer speaking to a group of people before the police swooped down on him.

Avinash Tonape, the I-T officer, was allegedly harassing Parashuram Bankapura, a jeweller from Ankali in Chikkodi taluk to pay Rs 10 lakh as bribe. Parashuram informed the police and Belagavi Market division ACP Narayan Bharamani laid a trap for Avinash Tonape.

On Friday morning, the I-T officer met a group of people and received an envelop containing cash on the premises of a private dental college when the police team swooped down on him and caught him redhanded. Avinash was then taken to the ACP’s office for further questioning.
