BENGALURU: The Congress-led government is planning to take over BBMP schools and colleges on the ground that these educational institutions are not being properly managed.

Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar is planning to upgrade city schools as part of his ‘Brand Bengaluru’ project. Therefore, the government has decided to bring BBMP schools and colleges under the Education Department.

Schools and colleges under the BBMP were being run as per the order of the special commissioner. The Palike also allocates crores as grants to these schools and colleges in its budget. However, the pass percentage at these schools has not been to expectation. Over the last four or five years, some SSLC and PU colleges have registered zero results. Due to this, the Education Department plans to take over 166 schools, colleges and kindergartens that are being run by the BBMP.

The BBMP has under it 93 nursery schools, 4,139 students, 34 teachers and 104 guest teachers. There are 16 primary schools with 3,744 students, 32 teachers and 91 guest teachers and 33 high schools with 8,087 students, 35 teachers, and 302 guest teachers. There are also 118 junior colleges under the BBMP with 5,354 students, 54 teachers, and 171 guest teachers and 79 PU colleges with 1,096 students, but there are only 55 guest lecturers. There are 79 students pursuing graduation in two degree colleges, along with eight guest lecturers.

The Education Department has already gathered information about schools and colleges. The blueprint has been drawn and the data shows 22,499 students. The department has also collected the details of teachers, movable and immovable properties.
