BENGALURU: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has planned to implement the pay-and-park scheme on 685 roads in the eight zones of the city.

The BBMP plans to implement pay-and-park on 685 roads in the city.

As per the BBMP’s plan, pay-and-park will be introduced on 197 roads in the south zone, 137 in the west zone, 104 in Dasarahalli, 59 in the east zone, 50 in Yelahanka, 44 in Bommanahalli, 32 in Rajarajeshwari Nagar, and 50 roads in Mahadevapura zone.

Initially, the civic body started the pay-and-park system on 85 roads in the city. In co-ordination with the Directorate of Urban Land Transport, it planned to fix the tariff for parking at Rs 15–20 for two-wheelers and Rs 30–40 for four-wheelers for a fixed duration. If the vehicle owners are more than 10 minutes late, they will be fined Rs 500. The money from this will be used for a project to provide non-motorised transport facilities.

Prahlad, BBMP chief engineer.

The BBMP has called for a tender and decided to impose penalty if pay-and-park is not implemented.

“We have noticed that vehicles parked on the roadsides block traffic. To avoid parking problems, we have planned to implement a smart parking system. We chose 85 roads in the city, installed pay-and-park system and it has been successful. Now, we are planning to do the same on 685 roads in eight zones in the city. These are all digitalised parking spaces and we plan impose penalty if the vehicle owner parks for a long time”, said Prahlad, BBMP chief engineer.
