BENGALURU: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has planned to introduce mechanical and manual push sweepers to clean the city’s roads. This will also protect pourakarmikas from accidents and health problems.
The number of vehicles in the city is increasing every passing day and there is much traffic congestion. The pourakarmikas clean the city by risking their lives and hence, the BBMP has planned to introduce mechanical sweepers to clean the major roads in the city. The mechanical sweeper weighs 30 kg and has trolley wheels for movement. As soon as it is started, it automatically picks up the garbage on the road.
Bengaluru has about 13,000 roads, including 1,400 main and sub-arterial roads. The BBMP has called tender for Rs 3.5 crore for the purchase of 815 mechanical and manual and push operating sweepers.
“Our pourakarmikas clean 13,000 long roads in the city. Already, 26 mechanical sweepers are working to clean the roads. We have called for tenders for Rs 3.5 crore for 815 new machines. One machine costs between Rs 35,000 and Rs 40,000. It will be introduced on the main roads. The holding capacity of the machine is 50 litres”, said Basaraj Kabade, Chief Engineer at the BBMP Solid Waste Management division.
