BBMP plans to adopt rapid road technology at more locations in city

BENGALURU: After laying a 500-metre stretch of rapid road along Old Madras Road, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is now planning to adopt the same technology on other roads in the city where traffic cannot be diverted.

The civic body claims the rapid roads do not develop potholes and can last up to 45 years. The Old Madras Road stretch will be opened to traffic and it will be studied for the next 40 days for load-bearing capacity, bumps and other factors.

The rapid road technology brings down time required to white-top a road.

The BBMP says rapid roads are a disruptive technology and will help lay roads faster than regular white-topping which is time-consuming. “We will adopt the technology where there are no alternative roads for diversion of traffic so that there are no traffic jams”, said BBMP Chief Engineer B S Prahalad.

Some of the roads the roads where BBMP plans to adopt the rapid road technology include KR Market Road, Hebbal, Sarakki, Marathalli, Silk Board junctions, Goraguntepalya, Kadubeesanahalli junction road, Jayadeva junction road, Banashankari junction road and Ibblur junction road.

Whether these new technologies will actually bring some respite for motorists remains to be seen.
