Basaveshwara statue desecrated in Chittapur town, suspect nabbed by locals

KALABURAGI: A drunk man has been accused of desecrating the statue of 12 century reformer Basavanna at Chittapur town in Kalaburagi district on Friday.

The Lingayat community has alleged that the drunk Muslim man had desecrated the statue by climbing on it and covering the face with a cloth. The suspect, who was wearing a T-shirt with AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi’s picture on it, was subsequently nabbed by the police.

On Friday morning, when the police brought to the suspect to the spot as part of the investigation, crowds from both communities gathered near the statue and demanded strict action against those responsible. The Chittapur police have registered a case and are investigating.
