Bannerghatta jumbo dies of elephant herpes virus, post-mortem reveals cause

BENGALURU: The sudden death of an elephant at Bannerghatta National Park (BNP) was due to elephant herpes virus infection, the post-mortem report has revealed. A 14-year-old elephant had died recently in the Kodihalli range of Bettahalli forest under Bannerghatta Park.

The forest guards expressed concern over the cause of the elephant’s death. At present, there are more than 120 elephants in Bannerghatta National Park.

Following the virus infection, the forest officials are now preparing to check the health of other elephants, DCF Prabhakar Priyadarshi of Bannerghatta National Park told Public TV.
