Baby elephant falls into under-construction septic tank, pulled out by mother

MADIKERI: A heartwrenching incident, a baby elephant that lost its way fell into a septic tank that was under construction and struggled for more than an hour, at Nalathekere village in Kushalnagar taluk. But thanks to the mother elephant’s presence of mind and love, the baby elephant came out safely.

Around 7.30 om Tuesday, a baby elephant accidentally fell into a septic tank that is under construction near a house in Nalathekere village. As the pit was deep, the baby elephant was unable to get out and was struggling.

Locals who came to know about it immediately informed the Forest Department. Meanwhile, the mother elephant that was with the calf rushed to the spot and helped the baby come up using its trunk and body.

Before the Forest Department staff could reach the spot, the mother elephant’s efforts paid off and the baby elephant came out of the pit safely. Later, the mother and baby elephant went back to the forest with their herd, and there was no loss of life in the incident.

Locals who witnessed the scene heaved a sigh of relief. As open septic tanks and pits being built near forest areas are becoming a danger to wildlife, there is now a growing demand to take proper safety measures at such places.
