Asian Games: Sutirtha-Ayhika assured of bronze in table tennis after beating World No. 2 Chinese pair

HANGZHOU (China): Sutirtha Mukherjee and Ayhika Mukherjee beat World No. 2 China’s Meng Chen and Yidi Wang to assure a bronze medal in the women’s doubles event of the table tennis as the Indian duo stormed into the semifinal at the Hangzhou Asian Games on Saturday.

The Indian women’s pair triumphed by 3-1 (11-5, 11-5, 5-11, 11-9) in the TT doubles quarter-finals.

Ayhika and Sutirtha dominated the first game and did not allow the Chinese pair to get a rhythm. India won the first set 11-5. They continued their form in the second set as they clinched the game by the same scoreline 11-5.

In the third game, China made a comeback and denied India to win the game and then the match. China won the third set by 11-5. However, India sealed the match in the fourth game by winning against the World no. 2 by 11-9 win.

In women’s singles, Manika Batra lost her quarterfinal match against China’s Yidi Wang by 2-4 while Manush Shah and Manav Thakkar failed to advance to the semi-finals of the men’s doubles on Saturday as they lost 3-2 against the Republic of Korea’s Woojin Jang and Jonghoon Lim. (ANI)
