MANDYA: Robbers, posing as policemen, stole gold jewellery worth lakhs from a couple who were travelling and had stopped for rest, near the elevated section of the Bengaluru-Mysuru highway in Srirangapatna late on Sunday night.

The couple, Charan and Deepti from Kodagu were travelling from Bengaluru to Kodagu on the highway in a Maruti 800 car. Around 12,45 am, Charan pulled over by the side of the road as he was feeling drowsy.

Just then, two robbers, posing as policemen, came on a motorcycle and questioned the couple why they had stopped the car here and forced them to open the door.

Then, they abused the couple in foul language, threatened them and snatched gold jewellery weighing 30 grams from them. The couple later lodged a complaint with the Srirangapatna Rural police station.

Such incidents of robbery are increasing on the highway. Seven such cases have been reported on the Bengaluru-Mysuru highway in just four months. Police suspect that the same gang may be involved and have cautioned motorists to be careful, especially while traveling at night.
