DAVANAGERE: The owner of a medical store in Channagiri was arrested and booked under the POCSO Act after a video of him sexually assaulting a schoolgirl went viral on social media. The arrested was identified as Amjad, the owner of Amar Medical Store.
Amjad was arrested based on a suo motu complaint ASI Shashidhar with the cybercrime police. He was under various sections of the IT Act and POCSO Act and produced before a court which remanded him to judicial custody.
It is alleged that Amjad shot videos and pictures of women and girls who visited his store or a nearby clinic. After the video of him assaulting a schoolgirl went viral, he had fled town. In the video, he continued to assault the girl though she pleaded to him with folded hands.
It is said that Amjad had more than 60 obscene videos and pictures of women and girl on his mobile phone which he may have shot either on his mobile phone or on CCTV camera. Hindu groups have alleged that he targeted only Hindu women and girls and filmed them secretely. They had also demanded his immediate arrest.
Police Superintendent Uma Prashant said, “We received the obscene video and we registered a suo motu case at the CEN police station. Further investigation is under way. Storing obscene videos which hurt the dignity of women on mobile phones or any other gadgets amounts to an offence. If citizens come across any such cases, they can lodge complaints with the police and we will take necessary action”.
