BELAGAVI: A policeman allegedly locked up his wife in a shed on their farm for two months and tortured, her inflicting burns on her face, neck and hands, at Kannala village in Athani taluk. The woman somehow managed to escape from the shed and reached the Mahila Santwana Kendra in Belagavi and has been admitted to a hospital for treatment.

Yellappa Aski, a constable with the District Armed Reserve (DAR), at Tikota in Vijayapura district, was allegedly suspicious of his wife Prathibha and tortured her so that she would not meet anyone. He kept her in a shed on their farm where he tortured her.

Prathibha managed to escape and pleaded with the Santwana Kendra officials to rescue her from her husband’s torture. The Santwana Kendra immediately contacted the police and on their advice, shifted Prathibha to the district hospital where she is undergoing treatment.

Speaking to media persons in hospital, Prathibha said, “My husband has been torturing me for the last two months. He would hit me and scald me, and along with my sisters-in-law, would harass me daily. He burnt my face with a hot spoon. I had no contact with the outside world and he would give me limited food. He would even threaten to kill me”.

The victim’s parents have demanded strict punishment for the accused husband.

Yellappa Aski married Prathibha, a resident of Nidagundi in Raibagh taluk 10 years ago. The couple have three children, a boy and two girls. Her parents have now demanded the police to take strict action against Yellappa.
