BENGALURU: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) plans to conduct a survey of vacant sites to bring them under the property tax net. It also plans to impose fines where residential plots are not kept clean after issuing notices to the owners.

There are thousands of vacant sites in the eight zones coming under the BBMP and the civic body is planning to levy taxes based on their dimension. Palike Chief Commissioner Tushar Giri Nath has directed officials to prepare a list of vacant sites in the respective zones.

The BBMP will also impose penalties on owners of sites which are not kept clean, with garbage and debris dumped there. The owners will be first issued notices and if the sites are not cleaned, penalties will be levied.

As per the proposal, a penalty of Rs 25,000 will be imposed for the first time which will be doubled for the second violation and will go up to Rs 1 lakh for the third violation. How the move will be received by property owners remains to be seen.
