RAMANAGARA: In a major relief for state Congress president D K Shivakumar, his nomination papers for the Kanakapura Assembly segment have been found to be in order and have been accepted by the returning officer.
Lawyer representing Shivakumar gave details to the officials and all the four sets of nomination papers have been accepted.
Advocate L N Hedge, representing the BJP, said they had filed some objections with regard to his income declaration and tax dues. “We brought it to the notice of the returning officer, but he did not take note of it a and accepted all the four sets of nominations. We will discuss with our client and take the next step”, he said.
On the last day for filing nomination on Thursday (April 20), Shivakumar’s brother D K Suresh had filed three sets of nomination papers as an independent candidate fearing that Shivakumar’s papers may be rejected over discrepancies in the assets declaration. After Shivakumar filed his nomination, his election affidavit had been downloaded 5,000 times, giving rise to speculation.
Meanwhile, Shivakumar earned another reprieve after the Karnataka High Court stayed investigation into an illegal assets case by the CBI. On Thursday, the court had dismissed Shivakumar’s plea questioning the grant of prosecution sanction by the government. The court, however, extended the stay on investigation till the last week of May.
