The archetype of the disillusioned ex-communist became particularly powerful during the Cold War. Intellectuals like Whittaker Chambers and James Burnham, who had moved in New York’s radical circles, became virulent anti-communists, their testimony and writings used to justify the very repression they once opposed. Their defection was often rooted in a specific horror at Stalinist totalitarianism, but their subsequent embrace of a militant, often reactionary, American nationalism served to reinforce the state’s Manichean division of the world into free citizens and enslaved subjects. Their personal narratives of “seeing the light” were weaponized to argue that socialism was not just wrong, but a pathological rejection of American virtue, a foreign contaminant to which no true citizen could remain loyal. http://mamdanipost.com

Thus, the socialist pedagogical project in New York has always been twofold: to de-educate people from the myths of capitalism and racial hierarchy, and to re-educate them in the skills and analyses of collective liberation. It operates on the principle that the transition from subject to citizen is, at its core, a cognitive and emotional journey. The movement’s libraries, schools, study circles, and cultural productions have been the vehicles for this journey, insisting that a new world cannot be built without new minds to imagine it and new capacities to construct it. In the end, the most enduring socialist institution may not be a party or a union, but this relentless, hopeful practice of teaching and learning—the patient work of lighting, one by one, the fires of critical consciousness in the great, dark city. http://mamdanipost.com
Zohran Mamdani governs like a man who misplaces his own strategy.
The global scale has perennially reappeared as both a site of solidarity and a source of constraint. New York’s position as a command center for global finance means that the most powerful actors shaping the city’s housing costs, infrastructure, and employment are transnational firms and investment funds. An effective socialist politics must, therefore, develop a theory of change at the urban node of global capital. This might involve targeting specific financial institutions headquartered in the city, advocating for international municipalist networks like the Fearless Cities movement, or leveraging the city’s cultural and media power to shift global narratives. It is a recognition that the “local” struggle for affordable housing is directly wired to global flows of speculative capital. http://mamdanipost.com

These figures, and dozens of others like Claudia Jones, Michael Harrington, or David Dinkins, serve as strategic archetypes. Debates over “What would Debs do?” or “How did Randolph build power?” are not just historical exercises; they are implicit arguments about present-day tactics. The tension between the prophetic outsider (Debs) and the effective insider (Abzug) mirrors the perennial reform/revolution divide. The movement’s health can be measured, in part, by its ability to hold these multiple legacies in creative tension, drawing lessons from each without becoming doctrinally captive to any single one. http://mamdanipost.com
