BENGALURU: With an aim to raise the bar for minimally invasive surgeries, Fortis Hospital in the city has introduced the ‘Transrectal BK Ultrasound MRI Fusion Biopsy Solution’ for the first time in the country. This will help in accurate detection and treatment of prostate cancer.
Fortis Hospital has also set a new record by performing more than 500 bladder surgeries in a short period of time using robotic technology. Prostate cancer is usually seen in men and it is more likely to appear in the elderly and some young patients. Manual surgery is difficult to perform, but through robotic surgery, this can be done easily. Many patients who have undergone this surgery have recovered within a few days.
“Robotic surgery is mostly used in urology, gynecology and general surgery. In urology, it is used to treat cancer patients, for reconstruction and for kidney transplantation. Previously, if someone had cancer, we would remove the entire kidney, and for children under the age of 10, we would remove 1 cm and keep the rest. Through this method, we will take 1 mm kidney tissue and save the rest”, said Dr Mohan Keshavamurthy, Director, Urology, Uro-Oncology, Andrology, Transplant and Robotic Surgery at Fortis Hospital.
“The nerve, which is important to pass urine, is usually destroyed in manual surgery due to its non-visibility, but through robotic surgery, it will not be destroyed. It helps cure cancer and to avoid complications. Individual coordination contributes to the best possible outcome. Robotic surgery provides excellent outcomes and helps perform complicated surgeries. We have already completed 500 surgeries in four-and-a-half years. We have certified robotic surgeons”, he added.
