BENGALURU: In some cheer for users of the International Airport road, the Bangalore Development Authority has got the green signal from Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) for resuming work on the expansion of Hebbal flyover. The expansion of the flyover is expected to bring relief to motorists who as the Hebbal flyover witnesses traffic jams often.
The BDA will resume the expansion work after 10 long years and the first phase of construction will cost Rs 87 crore. The agency has received approval for a three-lane overpass bridge and a three-lane underpass as per the modified design. The construction is likely to be completed in one year.
There will be no changes in traffic movement on the Hebbal flyover an an additional lane of 22 feet width will be to added to it. This is significant to reduce traffic congestion.
In the first phase, the three-lane overbridge will be constructed from Kempegowda International Airport side towards Mekhri Circle, and a three-lane underpass will be built in the Yeshwantpur-K R Puram road direction. The total cost of the project will be Rs 225 crore and the required funds have been sanctioned by the government.
Bangalore Development Authority chairman S R Vishwanath said, “The proposed expansion of the flyover with a total length of 715 metres will be constructed from KIA towards Bangaluru city. Initially, a two lanes will be constructed, and a loop will join towards KR Puram. A total of three lanes will be constructed from this point”.
“Similarly, a three-lane underpass will be constructed in the Yeshwantpur-KR Puram direction. Earlier, the BDA had set a deadline of 26 months for completing the project”, he added.
Vishwanath further said, “Namma Metro has joined hands for the second phase of the flyover expansion project this month, and it is preparing the design. In the second phase, a loop connecting KR Puram and Nagawara Road will be removed and a signal-free flyover will be constructed. With this, vehicles coming from KR Puram can proceed towards Airport Road without any interruption”.
“If the Hebbal flyover project is completed, half of the traffic issues will be solved. A tender was called for other remaining work and once the process is completed, we will start the construction work”, Vishwanth added.
