Deep in debts due to cricket betting, constable arrested for extortion

BENGALURU: A police constable attached to Govindaraj Nagar police station, who had taken to blackmailing to clear his debts, which he had accumulated due to his betting addiction, has been arrested by the Halasur Gate police.

Anand was heavily into cricket betting and had accumulated huge loans after losing a lot of money. Unable to repay his loans, the constable had taken to blackmailing those into hawala trade and used to extort money from them.

 

 

In one instance, Anand intercepted Raju Ram, who was carrying Rs 10 lakh, on Chikka Annamma Street in Sunkalpet and threatened to arrest him, alleging that he was into hawala trade. He then told Raju Ram to deposit Rs 2 lakh in the bank account of his friend.

Raju Ram later lodged a complaint with the police, following which constable Anand was arrested. According to the police, FIRs had been registered against the constable in other police station earlier too.
