BBMP surveys illegal religious structures, to take up clearance drive

BENGALURU: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has conducted a survey of illegal religious structures that obstruct traffic in the city and plans to soon launch a drive to clear them.

After the survey, the city corporation has identified 277 illegal structures across the city. The survey to identify the illegal structures was taken up on the orders of a Division Bench of the Karnataka High Court. The Karnataka High Court had taken up a suo motu case and some others too filed petitions seeking to demolish illegal religious structures in the city.

The survey of illegal structures was conducted on the court orders of the High Court.

After the survey, illegal religious structures have been identified in all the eight zones. They include:

  • 26  illegal religious structures in Rajarajeshwari Nagar zone.
  • 193 illegal structures in the East zone; of these 112 have been cleared and 81 structures are regularised.
  • 142 structures in Mahadevapura zone, of which 132 were regularised, seven were cleared and three remain to be cleared.
  • 38 illegal structures were identified in the South zone, of which 19 have been cleared, 15 have been regularised, and four remain to be cleared.

“We conducted a survey to identify illegal religious structures in the city. This is an ongoing process. We will update it soon”, said BBMP Chief Engineer B S Prahalad.
