BENGALURU: A 19-year-old youth has been arrested for the murder of a 56-year-old man at Chikkakere Stadium in Anekal on the night of October 21. The accused is Sagar, a resident of Jigani while the victim is Yellappa, a resident of Sarakkanapalli in Tamil Nadu.

Yellappa had come to see the Dasara Jamboo Savari and had phoned wife to inform her that he would later go to their daughter’s house. But around midnight, Yallappa was brutally murdered after a quarrel while drinking. Sagar had struck him on the head with a piece of wood lying nearby and then called the emergency number 112 claiming that someone had fallen in Chikkakere Stadium. When the police arrived, Yellappa was still alive, but died before reaching hospital.

Sagar was a vagrant in Anekal who had got into bad habits. He would introduce himself to people and ask to buy him liquor. After they bought him liquor, he would steal money from them.

On Dasara Ambari day, Yellappa was at the bus stand and Sagar, who was standing there, talked to Yellappa. He introduced him and took Yellappa to drink liquor. Sagar came to know Yallappa had money with him and took him near Anekal Stadium where both were drinking liquor. Then, Sagar put his hand into Yallappa’s pocket to take money when the latter had hit him. Angered by this, Sagar hit Yellappa on the head with a piece of wood that was lying closeby.

Even as Yellappa was writhing in a pool of blood, Sagar took his money, mobile phone and ATM card and escaped. He then sat in the ambari vehicle parked near stadium gate, phoned 112 police and said someone had fallen. The police arrived and shifted Yellappa to a hospital. The police also found Yellappa’s purse and a SIM card number cover inside it. All the while, Sagar was sitting in the ambari vehicle and observing everything.

From the stadium, Sagar booked an Uber cab from Yellappa’s mobile and went to R K Dhaba in old Chandapura and consumer liquor. He returned to Anekal in another Uber cab and headed towards Bengaluru in a BMTC bus.

When the police started calling Yellappa’s number, Sagar received the call and said he did not commit the murder and tried to mislead the police. In the meanwhile, police checked the CDR location of Yellappa’s phone and it was revealed that the killer had again come towards Anekal and switched off the phone near Haragadde.

The police then got suspicious of Sagar’s voice as he had been earlier caught for mobile phone theft. He had been called to the Anekal police station and let off after a warning. The police had recorded an audio of talking to Sagar. When shown to his friends, they said the voice as Sagar’s. Then, the Anekal police set out on Sagar’s trail and took him into custody in Anekal. When he was brought to the station and interrogated, he confessed that he murdered Yellappa for money.
